HARYANA CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION – SYLLABUS

I. PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

1. General Studies

  • General Science
    Questions will cover general appreciation and understanding of science, including matters of everyday observation and experience, as may be expected of a well‑educated person who has not made a special study of any particular scientific discipline.
  • Current Events
    Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India & Indian National Movement
    Emphasis on broad understanding of Indian history in its social, economic and political aspects.
    Indian National Movement: nature and character of the 19th‑century resurgence, growth of nationalism, and attainment of Independence.
  • Indian & World Geography
    Physical, social and economic geography of India, including agricultural features and natural resources.
  • Indian Culture, Polity & Economy
    Political system, Constitution of India, Panchayati Raj, social systems and economic developments in India.
  • General Mental Ability
    Reasoning and analytical abilities.
  • Haryana Specific Studies
    Economy and people of Haryana; social, economic and cultural institutions and language of Haryana.

2. Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (Class X level – numbers, relations, order of magnitude, etc.)
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency – Class X level)

II. MAIN WRITTEN EXAMINATION

1. English & English Essay

Objective: To test the candidate’s ability to read and understand serious discursive prose and express ideas clearly and correctly in English.

  • Usage and Vocabulary
  • General Grammar and Composition

Essay Paper

  • Essay on a specific topic (choice provided)
  • Candidates must maintain relevance, logical organization, conciseness, and effective expression

2. Hindi & Hindi Essay (Devanagari Script)

  • Translation of an English passage into Hindi
  • Letter writing / Precis writing
  • Explanation of Hindi prose and poetry passages
  • Composition (idioms, corrections, etc.)
  • Essay on a specific topic (choice provided)

3. General Studies – I

  • Indian culture: Art forms, literature and architecture from ancient to modern times
  • Modern Indian history (mid‑18th century to present): significant events, personalities and issues
  • Freedom Struggle: stages and contributions from different parts of India
  • Post‑independence consolidation and reorganization
  • World history since the 18th century: industrial revolution, world wars, colonization, decolonization, political ideologies (communism, capitalism, socialism)
  • Salient features of Indian society and diversity
  • Role of women and women’s organizations
  • Population issues, poverty and development
  • Urbanization: problems and remedies
  • Effects of globalization on Indian society
  • Social empowerment, communalism, regionalism and secularism
  • World physical geography
  • Distribution of key natural resources (world, South Asia, India)
