UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in three distinct stages. You must qualify for each stage to proceed to the next. The pattern for 2025 follows the standard structure detailed below:
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
- Nature: Objective Type (Multiple Choice Questions).
- Purpose: Screening test only; marks are not counted for the final ranking.
- Negative Marking: Yes, 1/3rd (0.33) of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for every wrong answer.

Stage 2: Main Examination (Mains)
- Nature: Descriptive (Subjective/Essay type).
- Total Papers: 9 Papers.
- Ranking: Only marks from the 7 Merit Papers are counted for the final ranking.
A. Qualifying Papers (Marks NOT counted for ranking)
You must score at least 25% in each of these to have your other papers evaluated.
- Paper A: One Indian Language (from the 8th Schedule of the Constitution) – 300 Marks
- Paper B: English Language – 300 Marks
B. Merit Papers (Marks Counted for Ranking)

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
- Nature: Oral interview by a UPSC Board.
- Marks: 275 Marks.
- Purpose: To assess your intellectual qualities, social traits, and interest in current affairs.
Final Selection
Your final rank is determined by the sum of your marks in the Mains (Written) and the Interview.
- Mains Written: 1750 Marks
- Interview: 275 Marks
- Grand Total: 2025 Marks
